First Place!!!

Tonight was the Pinewood Derby! What a fun event. There was a track with a computer that recorded the times. Charlie won 1st place in his Den! He was so proud of himself and we couldn't have been prouder of him! He was so encouraging of all his friends. He would cheer during each heat and congratulated all his friends who also won. Charlie is loving Tiger Cubs and tonight he asked how long he could be in boy scouts!

Ballet Princess

At the start of the new year I signed up Annie for Ballet again. A new teacher bought the local dance studio and a bunch of her little friends are doing it now. She loves it! Her little class is full of girls from her preschool class.

Celebration of Life

Today I went to the services for a young man I meet years ago. His name was Ben Underwood. What an amazing young man! At 2 Ben lost his sight to cancer. Ben taught himself at a young age to use echolocation to navigate through life. He could ride a bike, play basketball, he never used a cane or let his lack of eye sight stop him from doing anything. At his service someone said "Ben didn't have sight but he had vision."

I first meet Ben when we was no more than 3 or 4 at a family camp at Camp Okizu. Even then you could tell what an amazing kid he was and his mother was a true inspiration. I hope that I can be that strong for my children as they grow up. I just want to hold my children close, to let them know they can do ANYTHING in this life they want to. I want them to know they are my world, that I hope I can protect them from things in life but that when I can't that I want them to know they are prepared, strong, and capable and that they can face life head on.

If you have a few minutes and want to be truly inspired watch the link about Ben's life. I am very thankful that I got the chance to meet him. The world was truly a better place for having had Ben in it.

Where did my baby go?

Audrey seems to be a funny mixture of our baby and a big kid. She definitely wants to be held and cuddled like she is my baby but she wants to be off just like her big brother and sister. Annie has outgrown her first bike helmet and scooter and Audrey quickly realized they are the perfect size for her!

NBA Watch out!

Charlie LOVES Playing basketball! If you watch the video he gave a kid the "eye's" this week. John & I about fell out of our chairs laughing when he did it. We asked him where he learned it and he told us he just knew it and wanted the kid to know that he was "watching" him. This week he even argued with the ref! (I think John was beaming he was so proud).

Loosing my mind...

Well I think I have lost it. John plays basketball on Thursday nights and so I had washed his jersey this morning. Well I thought I had put the load of wash into the dryer - I started the machine, I even ran it a second time (my dryer often needs 2 runs to dry a full load). Right before dinner I opened the dryer to pull out the jersey and guess what it was empty - I had been running my dryer for 2 hours empty!

Green Eggs & Ham

I don't know if I have posted about Preschool yet, but in November I took Annie out of her preschool and started a small one at home. I have Annie and 4 other little girls. We are having a great time and the girls seem to be soaking things up like little sponges.

Last week was the letter G and the color green so we read the story Green Eggs & Ham by Dr. Suess. The girls had so much fun mixing their green eggs and then eating them. All but one little girl loved them!

Dragon Theme

So after getting Charlie's decals for his Pinewood Derby car he is going with a dragon theme. I have been so impressed by both John & Charlie through out this whole thing. So many wives have told me how their husbands were obsessed with the whole car building and it was more the dad's than sons. Well John has let Charlie take the lead through out the whole time. He showed Charlie how to put the first decal on then let Charlie do the rest!

Is there any thing cuter than a baby butt way up in the air?

Last night John came up to bed about midnight to find Audrey asleep on the foot rest at then end of our bed. John said it was like she just wanted to come to our bed but couldn't make it all the way. Can I just say how cute is she!!!

Wii anyone?

Uncle Tim let Charlie borrow MarioKart this weekend and he and Annie had a blast playing it together. One thing I love about Wii is the kids get really into it and are burning some energy while they do it. I love watching Charlie sweat while he playing these games!

January in California

We have had INCREDIBLE weather lately. Today was a school holiday (MLK Day) so we spent the morning at the park. Really it was in the low 70's today - sorry for any of you in the east - but we are loving this weather. I know we will pay for it come summer and we are in a drought but right now it is so nice to get to be outside enjoying the sunshine! This morning about 7 or 8 mom's and I brought our kids out to the park to play and play they did for a good 3 hours. Charlie & Annie and their friends were off playing in their forts and riding their bikes everywhere. Audrey would have stayed in the swing all morning but she did venture to the slides to play with her little friend Addison.

After lunch we all went into town and took the kids to see a movie - Hotel for Dogs. The kids could not have been cuter - there was about 12 of them sitting all next to each other during the movie. (I tried to get a picture of them all but my camera died).

The life a glamorous girl!

Annie has a friend Claire whose mom Jaime (who happens to be my friend as well) cuts hair. I have been going to Jaime for a little while now and Annie has been asking me if Jaime could cut her hair too. This last Saturday I took Annie with me to get her hair cut and she had such fun. She was so excited to have Jaime wash & cut her hair and was so good while she dried it. Jaime was so kind to Annie and made her feel so special (thank you!) that she just loved it. Every morning she gets up and brushes her hair and uses her pretend curling iron on it. This morning she even came down with a big bow in her hair! It is hard work to be so cute.

Charlie's amazing fort

At the park by our house there is a little creek that runs through it and around the creek are lots of huge oak trees that make a natural fort for all the kids. I feel so lucky that Charlie and his friends have this great place to play and pretend. You can often find the kids in here making up the rules to their clubs or running through the dirt and creek, swinging from the branches and climbing the trees. Today I brought my camera and climbed all the way through the kids fort area and was even more impressed! How much fun they must have in there!

Team work

Charlie has his first Pine Wood Derby coming up in a few weeks. This morning Uncle Brian came over and brought a bunch of tools to help John and the other dad's in our den get the boys started on their cars. Charlie picked a template and loved working with John to cut it out and paint the car. He wants his car to be green and we are going to go to the hobby shop this week to pick out decals for it. Hopefully Charlie has the magic touch and his car will be fast!

Sweet Sister

Charlie is sick AGAIN. I am not sure what it is but we are waiting the results of a strep test right now. Really I think it is just the revolving plague at our house. So today I bought new tooth brushes and a big stack of paper plates, bowls and cups. I am going to get rid of it once and for all.

This afternoon while Charlie was laying in the recliner watching cartoons he fell asleep. I was in the kitchen getting Audrey and drink and I look up and there is Annie getting a blanket out of the closet and then she walked over and covered Charlie up. I went to help and she says to me "Mommy, I am worried about Charlie, I hope he doesn't feel too bad.". I was struck by how sweet my little girl is and how compassionate she is to her family, especially when we are sick or in pain.

Annie has a very sweet little personality and she is very thoughtful when it comes to people in distress. Last week I was at a friends house with the girls and their dog was very, very sick and old. Annie came in crying because she was worried about Emma and wanted to know if there was anything that could make her better. Emma had to be put down the following day and when Annie found out about it at preschool the following week she cried. John and I have often said she would make a great Doctor, nurse or Veterinarian (she LOVES animals.)

Moment to reflect!

A friend sent this today and I wanted to post it. Someday my kids can compare my life to theirs. I do remember being told to come in the house when the street lights came on (& pushing it until they were on all the way, not just the early glow!) We had a neighbor kid down the street - Little Matt (as opposed to the big Matt across the street) who used to walk right into our house!!! I also remember my mom hitting a police officers car with her VW van and flying forward because I didn't have my seat belt on - what would happen to me today if that happend - could you imagine the cost of that ticket! We have just let Charlie sometimes not sit in his booster and he is almost 7 and over 70 pounds!

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because,
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day, and we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms.......
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new
ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL!

If YOU are one of them CONGRATULATIONS!

Good Job Mommy!

One of my favorite things Audrey does is give someone a thumbs up when they do something good or she is happy about something. Yesterday I gave her a cookie (as you can see from her nose) and she said "Mommy tank you" and gave me a thumbs up!

Sunny Skies in California

It has been so nice outside the last few days that we have been spending lots of time out doors. Today we played at the park for over 3 hours! It amazes me that it is early January and 65 degrees out. The kids only needed sweatshirts and blue jeans. We have a great park by our house that has creeks running through it and huge oak trees that make up fort areas for the kids. Charlie and Annie played with their friends for hours today having the best time! We are going to have make sure we enjoy the weather because I am sure at some point it will get cold again but right now it sunny skies all week!

Basket Ball

Well today Charlie had his first basketball game. I am not sure who was more excited, John or Charlie. Charlie was so enthusiastic about it! He was out there playing his heart out. John told me he was impressed that Charlie was playing full court defense when he was only supposed to be playing half court (really I have no clue what that means but John was happy). Charlie's team is made up of 5-7 year old's and he loves it! Out of all the sports Charlie has played so far this seems to be the one he loves the best.

When you are ready for me let me know!

Charlie got this really cool Lego's set for Christmas. The intent was for him to be able to do it with John. Well I came in the house and see Charlie on the couch watching cartoons while John is engrossed in the Lego's. The kids went to bed and John kept working - he was so excited to to it. Late that night John came and got me and started pointed out all the cool things the Lego's had and what it could do. He kept saying they never had Lego's like this when I was a kid. So if you ever need a gift idea for John - Lego's.

CTR

On the way home from Church today Annie was bugging Charlie, as little sisters will do, by kicking the back of his seat. This is what I hear Charlie say to Annie "Annie, we learned about choosing the right in primary today. Do you think when you are doing that you are choosing the right!"

Ugh... I am not ready for this

This afternoon I took Charlie to get his hair cut. He was so cute, he poured over the books they had of hair styles trying to pick one he liked. Well what he wanted was colored hair! The hairdresser was so nice and made it red for him. Luckily it washes out! But still I think he may be one of the most handsome little guys I know!

New Years Day

It seems like the last few weeks have been so packed full of stuff with the holidays. Today was no exception. Charlie got a new bike for Christmas and John has been working really hard all week on helping Charlie learn how to ride it. Charlie has done great and is now a Two - wheel bike rider! Well not to be out done Annie said to John this morning, "daddy, will you take my training wheels off?" John said sure and took them off. As they were on their way to the park John started out holding her bike up to let her peddle. By the time they got to the stop sign Annie said "Daddy let go now!". She was off and riding she got it on her first try. John came home stunned that she did it and could even get on and start it herself (it took Charlie a few days to get that far!) He laughed because to get to the park you go down a hill and he said there was fearless Annie cruising all the way down the street to the park on her first try!

I think being a parent is like teaching your kids to ride a bike. We want to hover and help them as much as we can, we know if they fall it will hurt so we try to make sure that doesn't happen by holding on. We make them wear helmets and long pants to buffer those falls when they do happen. We want the road to be flat, smooth and safe. We want them to stay close not to ride away from us or want/need to go at it alone to soon. Some of our kids will take longer to venture off, will be more wary not taking to many risks, some will want us right by their side longer, while others want to be off flying as fast and far as they can, trying to test the limits of themselves at their first opportunity. When it is all said and done we have to remove the training wheels and let them try on their own to succeed. In they end if we have taught them well and prepare them they will all leave us standing there watching them venture off on their own, amazed, awed and impressed.

Happy New Years!

I can't believe it is New Years Eve already. Where did the year go. I have been in a very reflective mood all day. I can't believe I have been blogging for a whole year, but I will admit how neat it has been today to go back and read some of the older postings and look at the pictures of the kids. We have had an incredible year and the kids have grown so much!

Last year I asked the kids what their favorite thing we did during the year was so John & I did it again at dinner tonight. This is the consensus, they liked going to Monterey and to Wisconsin. Charlie loved going to sky high - it is his favorite place. They all loved Christmas and can't wait for it again next year. And this year they all want to go to Disneyland! (Isn't it good to start them young with goals?)

We had a great New Years at home with the kids. We told them they could stay up until midnight if they wanted. We had fun appetizers for dinner and the kids picked a cookie cake at Sam's Club for our little party. We played games and Wii. Audrey was out by 8:30 and by 10:00 Annie asked me to go lay down with her. Charlie made it to Midnight though and at 12:05 was asleep in bed!

2008 was a crazy, fun, busy but wonderful year for us. I know some people are happy when a year comes to an end. They say the new year is a new start but I hope for us it is just a date on the calendar and that we will be as happy together in 2009 as we were in 2008!
